Domaine Chapel is a Beaujolais estate founded by David Chapel and Michele Smith-Chapel in the Cru Village of Régnié-Durette. The Chapels produced their first wine - a 2016 Juliénas “Côte de Bessay” - in partnership with the acclaimed Morgon estate Domaine Lapierre. The connection between the Chapel and Lapierre families goes back to the 1980s. David’s late father, Alain Chapel was one of the leaders of French Nouvelle Cuisine in the 1970s and 80s (along with Paul Bocuse, Jean and...
Harvested from high density, gobelet trained vines. Whole cluster, semi-carbonic maceration with a low level of ‘tire’ due to thick skins. The mid-September temperature was cool because of the weather conditions and the high altitude of the cuvage. The juice remained between 15 and 16 degrees resulting in a slow fermentation over 20 days average. Each vat received a different level of press according to the density in order to create complexity in the final assemblage. No pipeage or remontage.
8 months of aging. Racked before bottling, 2g/ hl of sulfur added at bottling but nothing before. No fining or filtration.

The 2017 Juliénas exhibits aromas of raspberries, Griotte cherry and cocoa, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and open-knit palate that’s more concentrated than Chapel’s Beaujolais-Villages but scarcely more structured, sharing its satiny, transparent profile. The vines that produce this cuvée are located above the village, where the appellation touches Saint-Amour.See detailed press review

Made at Lapierre. Supple and ripe with red cherry and spice notes. There’s some tannin here. Fine-grained with good acidity, showing lovely savouriness. Really elegant and well defined: a new style of Juliénas?See detailed press review

Truly beautiful wine from the son of chef Alain Chapel and his wife Michele, ex somm at Thomas Keller's Per Se. From a south-east-facing 2.2ha parcel of 65 year-old vines on granite and schist at 400m. The cool weather in September meant that fermentation lasted more than 20 days. Ripe fruit but overall refreshingly irresistible. For drinking with or without food. Brilliantly smooth texture with no sacrifice of flavour.See detailed press review
