  • About this winery

Azelia is still something of a Barolo lover's secret. Though the estate is not a high-profile one, proprietor Luigi Scavino is cousin of Enrico Scavino of the renowned Paolo Scavino estate, and shares ownership of the famed Fiasco hill in Castiglione Falletto with him. Luigi, his wife Lorella and son Lorenzo Scavino own and maintain 16 hectares of vines in Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba (including Cru Barolo from Margheria, San Rocco and Voghera Brea) and Montelupo Albese (for their...

  • Tasting notes

n 2004 Luigi decided to age part of this Cru in large casks: an exemplary work. From it Margheria takes its best from itself. Complex aromas, black fruits, licorice and spices in the typical Serralunga style. Energetic. The tannins frame the structure giving density and deepness to the wine.

    Antonio Galloni, March 2016

The 2012 Barolo Margheria is a bit deeper and richer than the Bricco Fiasco. Savory herbs, dried flowers, iron and minerals are some of the signatures. This is an especially feral, powerful Barolo for the vintage, with real intensity and nuance to round out its powerful personality. The tannins are firm and dusty, but there is more than enough fruit to balance things out. The Margheria was aged entirely in cask.

    March 2016

Exotic aromas of watermelon, plum and flowers with hints of stones. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a fresh and clean finish. Racy and refined. Drink or hold.

    July 2016

Margarita is another outstanding Barolo from Azelia in 2012. As this fantastic Barolo opens it releases gorgeous aromas of cherries and raspberries followed by dried floral, crushed stones, leather and of licorice all taking shape in the glass. On the palate this is refined with beautifully polished, silky tannins. It continues to impress with remarkable balance and finesse from start to finish. Today, the Margarita seems to be the most accessible of the single vineyard releases from Azelia and should continue to drink well for years to come. (Best 2017-2029)
