  • About this winery

At heart, Catena is a story about family. Family who poured their lives, passion and spirit into transforming scrub-laden desert into some of the most beautiful and unique vineyards in the world. Family that passed their knowledge from generation to generation, blending collective memory with state-of-the-art science from the new world of viticulture. Family who, through risk-taking, faith and a little luck, transformed their treasured Mendoza terroir into the fountainhead of the award-winning...

    March 2016

Catena is better known for its Malbecs than its Cabernet Sauvignons these days, but it’s equally good at making both varieties. This blend of Luján with 20% Uco fruit is a delicious expression of the grape, with impressive backbone and presence and notes of mint, fresh tobacco and dried herbs. 2016-22

    May 2015

A many-layered, multi-faceted wine with great complexity and classic aromas of cassis, blackberry, blackcurrant, coffee and wood spice. Grapes were grown in vineyards that ranged from 940 meters above sea level to 1180 meters. Aged 18 months in new French oak. Full-bodied with great length; elegant and balanced. You’ll find my feature story on Catena, and a visit with Nicolas Catena that was part of my second book, Unquenchable. Cabernet Sauvignon food pairings: barbecued and grilled meats, game, chicken salad, pork tenderloin.

    December 2016

The 2013 Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon is ultra classical, with textbook varietal aromas and great freshness. The climatic conditions of the growing season seem to have worked perfectly for Cabernet in the higher altitude zones and this is a great example. The palate has very fine tannins and lively acidity. There is superb balance here.

    August 2016

Catena has gained an international reputation for great Cabernet wines, and this is no exception. The 2013 Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from Block 3 of the La Pirámide Vineyard in the Agrelo district of Luján de Cuyo, Block 2 of the Domingo Vineyard in the Villa Bastías district of Tupungato, and Block 2 of the Nicasia Vineyard in the Altamira district of San Carlos in the southern end of the Uco Valley. These vineyards are all set on sandy loam soil and at exceedingly high elevations (3,117-3,675 feet). The Cabernet is exceedingly smooth and begins with aromas of mocha, tar, black cherry, and smoked pork shoulder, as this has a smoky aromatic edge. The palate is smooth and viscous with flavors of black cherry, black olive, milk chocolate and sagebrush. This polished Cabernet shows that Catena is on top of their game. (Best 2016-2026)
