  • About this winery

Dog Point's Ivan Sutherland and James Healy, the former chief viticulturalist (Sutherland) and oenologist (Healy) at Marlborough's renowned Cloudy Bay, are two of New Zealand's most influential winegrowers. Together with legendary winemaker Kevin Judd they established Cloudy Bay as a New World icon, and during the 1990's it became one of the world's most fashionable wines. When Cloudy Bay was eventually bought by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy, Sutherland and Healy departed to create Dog Point....

  • Tasting notes

The palate is bold, with intense red and dark fruit. The use of whole bunch inclusion during fermentation adds a layer of dried herbs and floral notes. The wine has a rich and full palate structure, with even, fine grained tannins.

  • Viticultural notes

The 2015 harvest, began with an early start on the 3rd March after a warm and dry season, with only half of our annual rainfall (310mm). It was a small yielding year due to indifferent weather at flowering, followed by a dry summer, which lead to concentrated wines that will age well.

  • Winemaking notes

Hand picked and chilled overnight and handsorted. 85% destemmed and 15% whole bunches included. Fermented in small stainless open top fermenters with 100% indigenous yeasts over a period of 2 weeks prior to pressing into French oak barrels for eighteen months (40% new). Bottled without fining or filtration.

    March 2017

Impressive red-cherry aromas precede great depth and structured, handy tannins that pull real flavors out of the wine and coat the palate. This holds fresh and rich darker cherries and red plums long into the finish. Regal pinot with soul and swagger.

    February 2018

Aged in 40% new French oak, Dog Point's 2015 Pinot Noir is a pristine model of contained power. The cedary notes frame cola and black cherry fruit and channel it down the center of the fairway, a textbook drive designed to set up the second shot. That is to say, better things lay ahead for this medium-bodied wine, once it begins to evolve, loosen the shackles and spread out across the palate a bit.

Full, dark ruby-red colour with slight purple hues, lighter edged. This has a firmly concentrated and intense nose of ripe black cherry and dark raspberry fruit with an amalgam of dark plums, violet florals and fresh herbs, and a suggestion of nutty oak. Medium-full bodied, the palate has a deep and concentrated heart with rich, integrated flavours of ripe black cherries, raspberries and plums, melded with nuances of fresh herbs, a suggestion of whole bunch stalk perfumes, violet florals, with nutty and spicy oak. The fruit is supported by fine-grained, flowery and supple tannins providing a velvety structure, with harmonious, balanced acidity. The wine flows to a long, lingering finish of black and dark-red fruits, herbs and florals. This is a rich, finely concentrated, ripe black cherry and raspberry fruited Pinot Noir with subtle, complexing herb, floral and nutty detail on a velvety, but structured palate.
