Some yellow and emerald flecks in its youth. Nose is big ripe lychee, papaya and banana. Very expressive. Opens up to Turkish delight and spring flowers; honey suckle and daffodil. Absolutely beautiful! Palate is lush with exotic fruit, candied citrus and Manuka honey. Long and complex finish with a noticeable lifted sweetness compared to previous vintages.
A record early bud break signaled another hot ripe year like 2015, but a cool June and July slowed the growing season significantly. In September the sun came out and resulted in an excellent year for whites. Slow, steady sugar accumulation and beautiful acids were retained with the cool nights. Due to the dampness late in the growing season, Botrytis (Noble Rot) was present. This gave amazing honeyed flavours to the grapes and elevated the sugar levels that make this Gewürztraminer a truly unique and spectacular wine.
Grapes were crushed and de-stemmed before pressing. The pressing cycle for this varietal is unique to dark skinned whites. Typically, there is a longer press program that emphasizes slow extraction with extended skin contact and a higher pressure at the end. This allows clear juice to be in contact with skins longer, which is where much of the flavour in this grape is stored. There is a delicate balance of flavour extraction and phenolic extraction, and the wine can go pink if in contact with skins too long. Once settled, the clear juice was racked to stainless steel tanks and fermented at cold temperatures using native and selected yeast.

Delightful, perfumed, potent. Expect a delightfully classic Gewurztraminer character - Tinhorn's version is consistently expressive and perfumed. Notes of rose oil and lychee, orange blossom water and exotic spices, mango and freshly peeled ginger demand attention. Equally decadent on the palate; it is potent and concentrated, reminiscent of its Alsatian counterparts. Excellent balance and a lengthy zesty finish. Pair with holiday turkey, exotic fare, dishes with a bit of chili pepper heat or warm Munster cheese.See detailed press review

Late dampness in the growing season provided perfect conditions for botrytis in the vineyard, something that is very good in moderation for varieties such as Gew and Riesling, but very bad for most other varieties — it’s all in how you manage the noble rot. The team at Tinhorn got it right here with a lovely buckwheat honey note punctuating the delicate grapefruit, canned pear and ginger aromas. It shows weight and texture on the palate and is loaded with ginger spice, lychee, grapefruit, exotic fruits and honey-nut flavours through the long finish.
