SEA SMOKE ACHIEVES ORGANIC AND BIODYNAMIC CERTIFICATION FOR ITS ACCLAIMED SEA SMOKE ESTATE VINEYARD

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. (February, 2017) – Effective February 24th, 2017, the Sea Smoke Estate Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills Appellation has achieved both its organic and biodynamic certifications. The biodynamic certification of the Sea Smoke Estate Vineyard was certified by Demeter, and the organic certification was achieved through Stellar Certification Services. Both certifications were the culmination of three-year processes, during which time the entire Sea Smoke Estate Vineyard was farmed using strict organic and biodynamic criteria. As a result, because all of Sea Smoke’s wines are made exclusively using grapes from the Sea Smoke Estate Vineyard, all Sea Smoke wines are retroactively certified made from organically and biodynamically farmed grapes beginning with the 2013 vintage. Sea Smoke’s wines are not made using certified organic or biodynamic winemaking practices.

Sea Smoke has been a leader in the Sta. Rita Hills Appellation in the areas of sustainable, organic and biodynamic farming. In 2003, the winery began participating in the California Association of Winegrape Growers’ Code of Sustainable Winegrowing Practices, and in 2005, it began transitioning its Sea Smoke Estate Vineyard to biodynamic and organic farming practices. In addition to farming its own estate vineyard 100% organically and biodynamically, in August of 2016, Sea Smoke acquired the contiguous Rita’s Crown Vineyard and immediately began transitioning it to organic farming. Though grapes from Rita’s Crown are not used in Sea Smoke’s wines, the decision to farm the vineyard organically was made to increase the overall ecological health of the neighborhood.
