  • About this winery

Viña Montes is a modern-day success story. Started in only 1988, Montes has quickly realized the dream of its founders: pioneering the production of premium quality, “first-growth” Chilean wine respected by critics and trade, while elevating the winemaking profile of Chile on the world stage. Reaching such lofty goals in a very short period of time makes one wonder if the original founders Aurelio Montes, Douglas Murray, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand had an angel watching over their...

  • Tasting notes

Deep, intense ruby red with a striking violet tone. The nose shows its habitual elegance and exhibits potent aromas of ripe red and black fruits such as plums, figs, and blackberries. Soft notes of black pepper and charcuterie intermingle with interesting aromas of tobacco and butterscotch from the French oak, which lend complexity and heighten the seductive aromatic profile. The robust palate is well balanced with nicely rounded tannins.

  • Viticultural notes

The Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards destined for Montes Alpha are located in the Colchagua Valley, primarily at Finca Apalta, with additional contributions from Marchigüe. These two areas have soils of granitic origin at differing degrees of decomposition. Both have considerable variation in the clay content, depth, and organic matter. Apalta is very heterogeneous. Some sectors are highly influenced by the river, while others are more by affected material that has broken off from the mountains above. The soils are generally deep in the flat areas and thinner at the foot of the mountains and at higher elevations.

The Cabernet Sauvignon is preferably planted on ground that is flat or has a slight slope, where the soil is deeper and has a moderate capacity for moisture retention. The wines from Apalta offer very good aromatic expression with much elegance and complexity as well as intense colors. The topography of the Marchigüe property is much flatter, and its rolling hills are lower. The soils are shallow, and in some cases are no more than 60 cm deep with medium clay content and a high capacity for water retention. The Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards are located on the flat lands with a high percentage of rounded stones and little clay content. The vineyards are planted to a density of 5,555 plants/hectare (2,250 pl/acre) and are double guyot managed for approximate yields of 7,000 kg/ha (2.8 ton/acre).

  • Winemaking notes

Montes Alpha wines are made with select grapes from the Colchagua Valley vineyards, which are irrigated via the Sustainable Dry Farming system developed by Aurelio Montes and his team through years of research. This has meant not irrigating some vintages, allowing the vineyard to provide just the right amount of water after the winter rains. This reduces the water footprint by 65% and enriches the fruitiness and aromatic expression of the wine.

    March 2017

The inclusion of a growing proportion of fruit from cooler Marchigüe is bringing more
freshness and vivacity to this well made Cabernet Sauvignon. Dense, concentrated yet refreshing, with excellent structure, well handled oak, sculpted tannins and classic
    blackcurrant fruit.

A beautiful and balanced wine with blackcurrant and sweet tobacco character. Medium to full body. Stone and currant. Rose petal. Always excellent.
