  • About this winery

First and foremost René Rostaing is a Côte Rôtie Specialist. He is renowned for producing tiny quantities of extraordinarily refined Côte Rôtie wines, which in the words of Robert Parker are "reminiscent of Grand Cru Burgundy in their delicacy, elegance and sublime qualities." • Winemaking notes

Rostaing's Cuvée 'Ampodium' (formerly named 'Classique') takes its name from the original Roman name for the town of Ampuis where the winery is situated. It is a blend of 13 separate parcels, which creates a complex, multifaceted expression of Côte Rôtie made only with Syrah. Yields are very low and the wine is aged in old burgundy barrels.

    Josh Raynolds, March 2016

Bright purple. Intense floral pastille, dark berry and peppery spice scents on the highly perfumed nose. Juicy, incisive and pure, showing strong thrust and cut to the gently sweet black raspberry and cherry cola flavors. A smoky mineral quality adds lift to the floral-tinged finish, which lingers with excellent tenacity.

    Jeb Dunnuck, December 2015

The 2013 Cote Rotie Ampodium, which was just bottled prior to this tasting, is gorgeous. The wine is made from 100% Syrah from two top terroirs, Cote Blonde and Landonne, and aged all in Burgundy barrels; it has terrific notes of black raspberries, blackberries, crushed violets and dried flowers in a surprisingly forward, nicely concentrated, textured style that can be enjoyed anytime over the coming decade or more.

A lively, herb-accented style, with rosemary, savory and bay leading the way, followed by a lightly mulled core of raspberry and blackberry fruit.
