Catena Alta is an assemblage of historic rows within the Catena family Estate vineyards. The blend of these historic rows, like the marriage of sounds that create a symphony, yields a highly aromatic and elegant wine that speaks for the earth and the vines that have been tended by the Catenas for four generations. The Catena Alta wines can usually be drunk starting at three years after harvest and into the following one to two decades.
Vineyard lots are harvested at different times to ensure optimal natural acidity and moderate alcohol levels. Whole berries are hand loaded into small format fermentation bins and 225-500 L barrels; lots are treated individually; fermentation and maceration last for 16 – 35 days. Wild yeasts. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in barrel. Aged for 18-24 months, depending on the vineyard and harvest time. French oak.

(mostly from a high site with a cooler southeast exposition): Bright dark red. A bit muskier and lower-toned on the nose than the Catena Alta Malbec, offering scents of dark berries and chocolate. Then opened quickly and gained in verve, showing e fine-grained texture and a high-altitude light touch to its spicy red and darker berry flavors. Sourced from high altitude vineyards, La Piramide and Domingo, set on sandy loam, this wine was aged for 18 months in French barriques prior to bottling. Intriguingly this wine has 10% Cabernet Franc blended into the Cabernet Sauvignon. This inky colored red begins with aromatics of crushed mint, black tea, mocha and suggestions of eucalyptus. The plush mouthfeel is really lovely, as this wine delivers black tea, mocha, crushed mint and black olive flavors that sit alongside brisk minerality. The savory aspects of this wine and the salinity are striking. This is another outstanding Cabernet from winemaker Alejandro Vigil.See detailed press review

The 2014 Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon changed the blend slightly and was harvested earlier to preserve freshness. The idea worked nicely, obtaining a balanced and fresh varietal wine, still a little young, and even if the puppy fat is still there, the underlying acidity and freshness is great.See detailed press review
