  • About this winery

At heart, Catena is a story about family. Family who poured their lives, passion and spirit into transforming scrub-laden desert into some of the most beautiful and unique vineyards in the world. Family that passed their knowledge from generation to generation, blending collective memory with state-of-the-art science from the new world of viticulture. • Tasting notes

The Catena Cabernet Sauvignon shows a dark ruby color with violet tones. On the nose, it offers intense aromas of ripe raspberries and cassis with notes of pepper, clove, and a touch of cedar. On the palate, it is full-bodied and rich and displays layers of black currant and black raspberry with notes of cedar and oregano. This Cabernet Sauvignon is an elegant wine with silky tannins that provide structure and a long and persistent finish.

    Steve Thurlow, May 2016

I know that Catena is widely popular for its malbec but they do make awesome well priced cabernets like this one which deserve more attention. The 2014 is a deeply coloured purple red with pure aromas of cassis and blackberry fruit with well integrated oak spice, black pepper and tobacco notes and some minty freshness. The palate is elegant very smooth and full bodied with a long lingering well balanced finish. Very good length.

A smooth, full-bodied Argentine with notes of fleshy sweet plums and blackberries. Supple with a good finish. Pair with grilled steak.

    August 2016

This excellent 2015 bottling from Bodega Catena Zapata displays an intense dark color and opens with aromas of black cherries, black olive, anise and cassis with hints of pipe tobacco. There are plush flavors of anise, cassis, red cherry and boysenberry preserves. Displaying a surprising red fruit profile on the mid-palate, this has wonderful texture with a lovely voluptous mouthfeel. Having the stuffing for some short term cellaring, this should continue to evolve over the next few years. (Best 2016-2024)
