  • About this winery

At heart, Catena is a story about family. Family who poured their lives, passion and spirit into transforming scrub-laden desert into some of the most beautiful and unique vineyards in the world. Family that passed their knowledge from generation to generation, blending collective memory with state-of-the-art science from the new world of viticulture. Family who, through risk-taking, faith and a little luck, transformed their treasured Mendoza terroir into the fountainhead of the award-winning...

  • Tasting notes

The Catena Chardonnay exhibits the distinct aromas and flavors typical of its vineyard counterparts: Agrelo vineyard brings citrus and peach fruit flavors; Villa Bastías contributes stone fruit aromas and a rich, supple texture; and Gualtallary produces the lively floral notes, strong mineral character and bright acidity.

  • Viticultural notes

The Catena family has conducted extensive research into the soils and microclimates of Mendoza's high altitude wine country in the foothills of the Andes mountains. At different altitudes, the family’s Chardonnay vineyards express a unique profile of aromas and flavors: the ripe tropical fruit flavors and rich texture of the La Pirámide vineyard (3117 ft elevation); the white stone fruit and citrus notes of the Domingo Vineyard (3675 f elevation); the lively floral notes, strong mineral character and excellent acidity of the Adrianna vineyard (4757 ft). The blend of these components creates a wine of unique character that has balance, concentration and a strong varietal identity.

  • Winemaking notes

Whole cluster pressed; fermented, sur lies, in barrels and stainless steel. Wild yeasts. 40% does not undergo malolactic fermentation.

    December 2016

The balsamic and showy 2015 Chardonnay is a blend of three vineyards, one small plot from Agrelo (less than 10% of the volume, as it's no more than four hectares), another one from Villa Bastías from the Tupungato department and a third one in Gualtallary, also in Tupungato in the Valle de Uco. Vinified, aged separately and blended before bottling, 15% of the volume goes through malolactic in oak barrels where it also matured for one year while the rest was kept in stainless steel. It has a mixture of yellow fruit and subtle oak keeping a core of white fruit and flowers. This follows the style of the 2014--medium-bodied with some chalky tannins that provide a chalky texture and a supple finish. 300,000 bottles produced.

    August 2016

Sourced from the provinces of Luján de Cuyo (La Pirámide Vineyard) and Tupungato (Domingo Vineyard), the 2015 Catena Chardonnay is a great value release from this estate. This Chardonnay opens with aromatics of mushroom, heavy whipping cream, Pazzaz Apple and vanilla custard. There are bright flavors of mango, Gravenstein apple, starfruit and hints of lychee. The Chardonnay has a wonderful, intense mouthfeel and a gorgeous finish. (Best 2016-2020)
