  • About this winery

At heart, Catena is a story about family. Family who poured their lives, passion and spirit into transforming scrub-laden desert into some of the most beautiful and unique vineyards in the world. Family that passed their knowledge from generation to generation, blending collective memory with state-of-the-art science from the new world of viticulture. • Tasting notes

Catena Zapata Nicasia 2009 is a dark red violet Malbec. Ripe black fruits, sweet spices and thyme are some of the aromas that we can appreciate from this special malbec from one of the Catena´s highest family vineyards. Very complex and expressive palate, with lovely violet flavors, dark berries, licorice, bitter chocolate and spicecake.

Typical and gorgeous Malbec aromas of boysenberries, blueberries and raspberries with delicate scents of rose petals. A velvety texture and fine grained tannins support layers of succulent flavours such as dark cherries, flowers, fresh spices, coffee, minerals and some tones of well-judged oak. A serious wine for many years.

    Stephen Tanzer, February 2015

(these vines are planted at an altitude of 3,800 feet on fairly fertile soil): Good deep ruby. Brilliantly pure aromas of black raspberry, licorice and flowers, with sexy oak tones. Plush, seamless and sweet, offering terrific floral lift to its berry and dark chocolate flavors; shows an uncanny combination of richness and verve. This Malbec has the glossy texture and velvety tannins of a great Pomerol. The slowly rising, extremely long finish saturates the palate with lush fruit.
