Torraccia del Piantavigna is located in the foothills of Monte Rosa, the second highest mountain in the Alps. The estate covers 100 acres and is planted with indigenous varieties, mostly red Nebbiolo and Vespolina, with a small percentage of the local white grape Erbaluce. The vineyards are planted in the DOCGs Ghemme and Gattinara across six different vineyards, each of which has its own distinct soil structure and macro climate. Wines from these two appellations are dominantly Nebbiolo with a small percentage of Vespolina and can be tremendously long lived, rivalling those of Barolo and Barbaresco.

Winemaking is classic - the grapes are harvested by hand and are carefully selected before being de-stemmed and crushed. The length of maceration depends on the wine being produced. Maceration of the Nebbiolo for the Ghemme and Gattinara wines can last up to 30 days. Fermentation of the Nebbiolo takes place in stainless steel tanks before be being transferred to 2500ltr Allier Oak casks. The Ghemme and Gattinara wines are aged in barrel for longer than the 3 years dictated by the DOCG rules.

Alto Piemonte is a stunningly beautiful area and the wines here are just starting to be discovered by audiences in North America. Torraccia del Piantavigna is one of the most exceptional producers in the region with a long track record of success amongst the Italian Wine press. The wines routinely score Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso. Elegant, perfumed and extremely age-worthy, we could not be happier to introduce these wines to you.
