It is so refreshing to taste with proprietor Stephen Hansel. At a time when so many of the world's best wines are increasingly unaffordable for the normal consumer, Hansel has kept his prices decidedly reasonable. As I have written before, Hansel's wines epitomize what the Russian River does so well; namely rich, butter Chardonnays and forward, juicy Pinots.

Wine Advocate, October 2015

Absolutely magnificent is the 2013 Pinot Noir The North Slope. This wine is deep, rich, with forest floor, blackberry and blackcurrant fruit, licorice and Asian spices. It is full-bodied, somewhat primordial and dense, but muscular, rich, concentrated, and has the biggest upside and potential for complexity of all of the 2013s. Give it another several years of bottle age and drink it over the following decade. Some of the best values in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir emerge from Stephen Hansel’s winery in the Russian River Valley. He also has the wonderful Walter Hansel Wine & Bistro on Guerneville Road in Santa Rosa.

Antonio Galloni, January 2015

The 2013 Pinot Noir North Slope is a bit more lifted and aromatic than the South Slope. Today, the flavors are bright and precise, but there is little in the way of flavor complexity. That will come with time. Instead, it is the wine's nuance and textural finesse that are showing at this stage. Crushed flowers, mint and sweet red berries are laced into the super-expressive finish. There is a lot to like.

At Walter Hansel Winery, the emphasis is on low yields (which range from 1.5 to 2.7 tons/acre), precise viticulture and non-interventionist winemaking. Stephen Hansel (Walter's son) exercises strict control in the vineyards, producing beautiful - vineyard designated Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
