Wine Advocate on CATENA

Titre

Catena is almost equivalent to Argentine quality wine, as Nicolas Catena was the true pioneer and is still the most important wine personality in Argentina...They are so forward thinking and smart as they are still at the head of quality wines in the country, doing amazing research and never resting on their laurels. Alejandro Vigil is one of the most passionate and intuitive winemakers on Earth, and he’s also completely crazy about wine...We need more of these champions in the wine world. The result can be no other than superb wines, with some groundbreaking whites that could compete with the finest white Burgundies and the most amazing Malbecs you can think of.
Luis Gutiérrez, April 2014

Catena's Adrianna Vineyard

Catena truly is one of the most exciting wineries on the planet. The attention to detail here is second to none and you would be hard pressed to find a producer who spends more time, effort and money on research, in addition to the pursuit of excellence.

The Catena family’s Adrianna vineyard is special for so many reasons. Planted at altitude in a quest to make fresher more structured wines Nicolas Catena was called crazy and told that the fruit would never ripen. Undeterred he planted anyway. The wines today are some of the freshest, most structured and balanced in all of Argentina. Due to the altitude the grapes produce dramatically thicker skins in order to protect the seeds from the sun (an adaptive evolutionary development in the quest to ensure propagation of the vine). This increases the phenolic material in the grapes substantially from those vinified at lower elevations. The altitude also allows for huge shifts in day and night time temperature which allow the grapes to get ripe, but retain ever important acidity. The balance obtained from this freshness is exactly what Nicolas hoped when he planted the vineyard. The increase in phenolics was a beautiful surprise and the site is exceeding the Catena’s already lofty ambitions.

Never a family to rest on their laurels, now under the stewardship of Laura Catena, the team’s studies are digging ever deeper into the soils and microbial life that make vines mere metres apart perform differently. The Adrianna vineyard is like owning an entire village in Burgundy and the small block wines below are the Catenas' attempt to find their Grand Crus. This is not hyperbole. With all of their research efforts, the rate at which Catena is learning and increasing understanding about their land is unprecedented.

While we have used Burgundy as a reference to the Catenas' quest to divine the distinctiveness of these small blocks of terroir we shouldn’t lose site of the fact that the terroir here is the sum of all its parts: Altitude, intense sun, complex soils, complex microbial life -- and that these conditions result in wines that are distinctly Argentine.

The scale of excellence here is astounding. Enjoy!

May 2018

The third vintage of this elegant, spicy, 80% whole bunch-fermented Malbec, made in
more of a “European” style than many of the top Catena reds, is every bit as good as its
predecessors. Fresh, tangy and peppery, with skilfully integrated 50% new oak, crunchy red berry fruit and a fine, refreshing finish.

Tim Atkin MW, May 2018

The soils of the River Stones Malbec, located in a dry creek, are identical to those of the
White Stones Chardonnay, producing a rich, spicy, textured wine that’s fermented with 100% stems. Plum and bramble fruit flavours are complemented by understated oak and a ripe, figgy finish.

Jeb Dunnuck, February 2019

A vineyard selection from old vines, the 2015 Malbec Argentino is all Malbec sourced from the Angelica Vineyard (Lunlunta District) and Nicasia Vineyard (Altamira District) and aged two years in new French oak barrels. This uber-sexy, opulent 2015 offers a rock star bouquet of blueberries, blackcurrants, smoked earth, chocolate, and tobacco leaf, with an almost Graves-like minerality and earthiness that develops with time in the glass. Ripe, full-bodied, and plush on the palate, it nevertheless has density and depth, with notable tannins, moderate acidity, and a great finish. It’s a brilliant wine from this beautiful estate to drink over the coming 10-15 years.
