Jean Louis Chave

We rarely tell you to buy a wine, preferring to share the details of our many great winery partners and letting you decide. But...

If you love the Northern Rhone you should definitely buy the JL Chave St Joseph offered today.

Today’s feature wine is Domaine Chave's 2015 St Joseph. This is an exceptional wine from an appellation that many consider undistinguished and too large, especially when compared to the more famous and much smaller appellations of Côte-Rôtie, Cornas and Hermitage. Jean Louis Chave has made it his mission to change this point of view. In one of the most exciting vineyard projects we have seen anywhere; the Chave family has, over the course of 20 years, slowly replanted an entire hillside of abandoned vineyards near Mauves. They have also collected vineyard parcels along several tributaries that feed into Rhone river. These hillsides share the similar east and south east exposures of the more famous AOC's mentioned above. The slopes here are precipitously steep and the organically farmed terraces take exponentially more work to maintain than those farmed on the valley floor, but "the work", as Jean-Louis puts, it is done because "it is right" and it produces superior product. Can a $110 wine be great value? It can when it is this good. A distillation of beautifully farmed vines from an appellation's best terroir, interpreted by, as Robert Parker states, one of "the planet's greatest winemakers".

November 2018

Very alluring, this red cuts a broad swath, as velvety-textured cassis, plum and blackberry puree flavors move through, infused with warm anise, black tea and mesquite notes. The mouthwatering acidity is well-buried through the finish, lending this somewhat weighty wine a mouthwatering character. Best from 2019 through 2028. 1,500 cases made.
