Vinous on FAIVELEY

Titre

Jérôme Flous, who has headed up the winemaking team since 2007, joined us at the beginning of the tasting. He has changed the winemaking style, introducing more elegance and finesse to the previously austere, dense and occasionally unyielding wines. “I want to be reactive to Nature,” he told me, “and I want to adapt with the vintage. I don’t have any recipe. [In 2017] the Latricières-Chambertin, and both the Echézeaux and the Clos de Vougeot are some of the best that I encountered during my visits. Of course, there is plenty to be found at the lower rungs of the hierarchy.

An extraordinary wine, even for this very special Grand Cru. So mineral and pure with a gigantic concentration of sour cherries. The extremely fine and racy finish lifts off towards the heavens. You could drink it on release, but this has enormous aging potential.

Deep ruby red colour. The nose discloses black fruits, toasty notes and a hint of oak. The smooth, round attack gives way to a powerful and structured mid-palate. A well-balanced and very persistent wine with excellent ageing potential.

Burghound.com, January 2019

(from a huge 3.96 ha parcel). Here the wood regimen is no longer subtle though it stops short of masking the beautifully layered aromas of plum, spice, dark currant and freshly turned earth. The highly energetic and delineated middle weight plus flavors exude noticeable minerality on the powerful and focused finish that displays outstanding depth and persistence. Moreover, the finish really fans out as it sits on the palate.

This wine still shows bold tannins although its fruit suggests that plenty of richness will come. Its ripeness and strawberry fruitiness already hint at a powerful, delicious and full wine.

About FAIVELEY

FAIVELEY

Founded in 1825, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy's greatest domaines. Originally the company was a classic negotiant business, but after seven generations of steadily acquiring properties the Faiveley family have established themselves as the most important vineyard owners in Burgundy, with 120 hectares of painstakingly selected small plots (typically not larger than 1 hectare in size) spread across the region.
