Vinous on RENÉ ROSTAING

Titre

René Rostaing tells me he thinks of 2016 as "the definition of Côte-Rôtie. The vintage personality is made of finesse, freshness and detail, with power but not weight." He finds the wines to be "fine but not delicate, or fragile at all" and thinks they will age gracefully "but be attractive throughout their lives, without ever really closing up." While Rostaing respects 2015 for its "depth, power and structure" he believes “2016 to be a truer Côte-Rôtie vintage" because of the aforementioned freshness and elegance, attributes that "make the appellation unique in the northern Rhône." Rostaing adds "ripe vintages may make impressive wines but too often they obscure terroir and finesse."

(made from vines that are over 100 years old) Lurid ruby. Heady aromas of ripe blueberry, black raspberry, incense, olive and candied flowers are sharpened by cracked pepper and mineral flourishes. Sweet and energetic on the palate, offering intense dark fruit liqueur and spicecake flavors and suggestions of licorice and cola that build with air. Lush but surprisingly structured thanks to a core of juicy acidity, as is typical of the best wines of the vintage. Building tannins shape the sappy dark fruit on the impressively long, juicy finish, which leaves a sexy floral note behind.

This is very solidly built, nearly bristling with briary energy along the edges while the core of steeped plum, cherry and currant fruit cruises through. Mouthwatering savory, tobacco and olive notes score the finish, all set against a lovely floral accent in the background.
