  • About this winery

Viña Montes is a modern-day success story. Started in only 1988, Montes has quickly realized the dream of its founders: pioneering the production of premium quality, “first-growth” Chilean wine respected by critics and trade, while elevating the winemaking profile of Chile on the world stage. Reaching such lofty goals in a very short period of time makes one wonder if the original founders Aurelio Montes, Douglas Murray, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand had an angel watching over their...

  • Tasting notes

Intense carmine red in color with tremendous aromatic potency and a predominance of ripe red and black fruit, dairy notes, and a certain contribution of sweet spices, biscuits, and pastries. 18 months in oak barrels contributed aromas of vanilla, dark chocolate, nutmeg, and toast that harmonize very well with the ripe fruit. The palate has good structure, is correctly balanced, and has very well-rounded tannins in perfect harmony with the acidity from the 8% Petit Verdot in the final blend. It is creamy and lush with a long and persistent finish. Flavorful and very much in sync with its aromatic side.

  • Viticultural notes

The 2012–2013 season was cooler than normal in all of Chile’s wine regions, which delayed the onset of budbreak and flowering with respect to the previous season. December was rather cold and registered precipitation in the central zone, resulting in a vigorous elongation of the berries, which in turn tended to make the bunches heavier. A cold January not only delayed veraison, but extended its duration. Furthermore, precipitation put the most sensitive varieties at risk. Daytime temperatures were definitely cooler during the ripening period, although February presented days with high temperature peaks that put the grapes at a level of ripeness that was very similar to that of 2012 on the same date.

  • Winemaking notes

100% of the components of this wine were aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels.

    Natalie MacLean, November 2016

Purple Angel will make you feel as though you've gone to heaven aloft a cloud of sensory pleasure. Can one wine pack more flavour into the bottle? I'm skeptical. If you love full-bodied, juicy, fruit-forward wines, this is your apogee as it also has all of those other great hallmarks of superb wine: complexity, balance and finish. Pair with a juicy steak. Yes please!

    May 2016

The transparency is incredible to this year of Purple Angel. Aromatic and bright with blueberry, fresh herbs and spice. Full body, silky and perfectly polished tannins. Fabulous length and layers. Superb. Blend made from 46% carmenere from Marchigue, 46% from Apalta and 8% petit verdot. Drink or hold.

    March 2017

Purple Angel is the best wine from Montes in my view. Combining equal amounts of
Carmenère from Marchihue and Apalta with 8% Petit Verdot (also from Apalta), this is the best release I’ve tasted. Smooth, silky tannins, ripe, chocolate and lead pencil notes, wellintegrated new oak and a well balanced finish.
