At heart, Catena is a story about family. Family who poured their lives, passion and spirit into transforming scrub-laden desert into some of the most beautiful and unique vineyards in the world. Family that passed their knowledge from generation to generation, blending collective memory with state-of-the-art science from the new world of viticulture. Family who, through risk-taking, faith and a little luck, transformed their treasured Mendoza terroir into the fountainhead of the award-winning...
Dark, violet colour with deep black tones. This microclimate blend of four unique vineyard sites offers intense aromas with a soft generous texture and concentrated flavours. Angelica vineyard lends ripe plum and chocolate flavours with a very soft, supple mouthfeel. La Consulta vineyard brings a core of black currant and cassis, with excellent structure and length. La Piramide vineyard offers blackberry fruit with a slight earthy tone and notes of spicy black pepper. Finally, the Adrianna vineyard lends exceptional concentration with explosive floral aromatics. Together they create a complex blend of aromas and flavours - a wine with excellent concentration, balance and freshness.
This wine goes through an extensive cold maceration for 8-10 days at 45°F to extract aromas. The juice is then fermented for 14 days with a post-fermentation maceration of 16 days to extract flavors and structure; malolactic fermentation happens in barrel; the wine is aged for 14 months in 70% French oak (35% new) and 30% American oak.
The Catena family has conducted extensive research into the soils and microclimates of Mendoza's high altitude wine country in the foothills of the Andes mountains. At different altitudes, the family’s Malbec vineyards express a unique profile of aromas and flavors: the ripe plum fruit flavors and silky texture of the Angelica vineyard (2,850’ elevation); the dark fruit character and pepper notes of the La Pirámide vineyard (3,100’ elevation); the black cherry aromas and excellent structure of the Altamira vineyard (3,870’ elevation); the explosive floral aromatics full, concentrated mouthfeel of the Adrianna vineyard (5,000’). The blend of these components creates a wine of unique character that has balance, concentration and a strong varietal identity.

Aromas of blackberry and walnut with hints of flowers. Medium body, focused and bright with dried fruit and just a hint of mushroom in the aftertaste.See detailed press review

Consistent, excellent, finessed.
Made by Argentina's pioneering Malbec family, this wine comes from fruit harvested from prestigious Lujan de Cuyo, Tupungato, Maipu and San Carlos vineyards.
Boasting excellent consistency and intensity, this vintage offers that distinct Catena succulence; wild blackberries and red currents, dried violets, grilled herbs, tobacco, bitter chocolate and espresso. Equally savoury on the palate, it has a masculine character, impressive acidity and spice and mocha flavours followed by a long tealeaf finish.
Second Review: Dec 2018
Savoury aromas of red currents and forest berries, roasted herbs, espresso and dried violets lead to a succulent, well balanced and postured wine with a supple weight.

The impressive 2015 Catena Malbec is subtle, balanced and elegant. It mixes fruit from many different zones, with the grapes from the higher part of Valle de Uco fermented with full clusters, the medium part (Vista Flores, lower La Consulta) destemmed and put together with the full clusters from the higher altitude vineyards and the lower parts totally destemmed and in stainless steel. This is a complex blend that showcases the typicity of Malbec in the province of Mendoza with perfumed notes of violets and black cherries, and a touch of spices. The palate has great balance, elegance and subtleness with very fine tannins. Great value for money.See detailed press review

The 2015 Catena Malbec begins with aromas of red currant jelly, black tea and coffee grounds all taking shape in the glass. On the palate this is round and velvety, with flavors of black tea, mocha and cassis with a touch of anise, which come together with dark fruits and persist through the finish.See detailed press review

Treve Ring, August 2018
The High Mountain Vines tips us off to the freshness to be found here, which works to carry the sunned red fruits and leathered mid along a lengthy palate. Sourced from four vineyards ranging from 920m - 1450m, and across various soil types, this carries cherries, wild raspberries, dark cocoa dusted tannins along a stream of acidity to a satisfyingly lingering, smokey finish. This vintage has really opened up, though still benefits from a decant.See detailed press review
