  • About this winery

At heart, Catena is a story about family. Family who poured their lives, passion and spirit into transforming scrub-laden desert into some of the most beautiful and unique vineyards in the world. Family that passed their knowledge from generation to generation, blending collective memory with state-of-the-art science from the new world of viticulture. Family who, through risk-taking, faith and a little luck, transformed their treasured Mendoza terroir into the fountainhead of the award-winning...

  • Tasting notes

Deep violet in color with indigo highlights. The nose has aromas of ripe red and black berry fruits with notes of violets and lavender and hints of leather and a touch of spices. The wine is full-bodied and rich, with sweet tannins and a smooth structure, offering multiple layers of blackberries and black currant with hints of licorice, vanilla, and black pepper. This wine's lengthy finish shows beautiful minerality with fine tannins and lively acidity.

  • Winemaking notes

In the mid-nineties, in an effort to produce a super-premium wine, the winemaking team of Catena began an in-depth investigation into the yields from specially selected, high altitude vineyards, identifying the individual rows that produce the best fruit. Catena Alta is an assemblage of these historic rows within the Catena family’s estate vineyards. The blend of these rows, like the blend of musical notes that compose a symphony, creates a wine that is layered and complex, concentrated yet nuanced. Catena Alta Malbec is sourced from Block 18 of the Angélica Vineyard in Lunlunta, Block 4 of the La Pirámide Vineyard in Agrelo, Block 1 of the Nicasia Vineyard in the Altamira district of San Carlos and Blocks 3 & 9 of the Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary.

A rich and opulent red with exuberant fruit of blackberry and blueberry. Full body, fine tannins. Racy.

    Natalie MacLean, April 2016

The grapes for this wine from four different vineyards, picked at four different times from old vines (historic rows). Long finish with notes of dried tobacco leaves, leather and spice. Espresso aromas on the nose with fleshy ripe black plum flavours on the palate. Full-bodied and smooth. Lovely, long dark spice finish. Truly one of Argentina’s flagship wineries.

    Luis Gutiérrez, December 2016

I had two vintages to taste of a blend from their best vineyards, Angelica (Lunlunta), La Piramide (Agrelo), Nicasia (Altamira) and Adrianna (Gualtallary), one of them the 2013 Catena Alta Malbec, from a cool vintage that produced very balanced and fresh wines. There is contained ripeness and subtle aromas, harmonious, with unnoticeable oak aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, with soft, polished tannins and great acidity.

    February 2017

Four vineyards: La Pyramide, Angelica, Adrianna and Nicasia. Sleek, floral nose with lovely fresh cherries. The palate is supple and fruit driven with great balance and a lovely stony detail to the cherry and plum fruit. I love the floral aromatics and the freshness on the palate.

    March 2016

Sourced from four different vineyards in Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley (with the latter origin dominating the blend), this is made up of 75 lots and is a seamless, aromatic cuvée from the brilliant Alejandro Vigil. Violets and lavender on the nose segue into flavours of blueberry and blackberry.

    August 2016

The exceptional Catena 'Alta' Malbec is another outstanding release from Bodega Catena Zapata in 2013. This intense bottling was sourced from Block 18 of the Angelica Vineyard in Lunluta, Block 4 of the La Piramide Vineyafd in Angrelo, Block 1 of the Nicasia Vineyard in San Carlos and Blocks 3 and 9 of the Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary. Head winemaker Alejandro Vigil aged this Malbec wine 18 months in French oak prior to bottling, and a further 24 months in the bottle upon release. Once in the glass the wine slowly develops aromas of violets, Turkish coffee, rose petals and blueberry pie. On the palate there are dense flavors of mocha, crème de cassis, anise, graphite, blueberry jam and crushed violets. The remarkable balance, silky texture and underlying acidity make this completely compelling. This gorgeous effort will continue cellar beautifully into the next decade. (Best 2016-2027)
