  • About this winery

Scruffy-faced and ponytailed, Adi Badenhorst is one of the wine world's great characters. Formerly the winemaker at the renowned Stellenbosch estate Rustenberg, he comes from a family with a distinguished wine pedigree: his grandfather was the general manager at Groot Constantia for 46 years. In 2008 together with his cousin Hein he purchased a 60 acre farm which was in the middle of nowhere and had been abandoned since the 1930's. • Tasting notes

The juice always takes a long time to ferment and the resulting wine has a wonderful minerality to it. Obviously textured and deep in flavour because of the low yields and age of the vines. It has a complex flinty aromatic profile and the winery reckons it can age pretty well.

  • Viticultural notes

This vineyard was planted in 1966 on a rough, exposed granite outcrop. The 0.6ha yields around 1000L of juice. The name (“Rock Head”) is the original name of the site and refers to the granite rocks on this hill.

  • Winemaking notes

Hand picked into picking crates and chilled overnight in a cool-room. The parcel is pressed together without destemming and the juice is run-off directly to very old 500L casks. The fermentation takes a few months to complete naturally. The wine stays on its gross lees for the entirety of its maturation whereafter it is bottled without any fining or filtration.

    2018

A first release from the so-called “Stone Hill”, this is a stunning 2017 Chenin (and it’s not
alone), this old vine white is unfined and unfiltered, with a hint of fruit sweetness, a creamy  mid palate, stony intensity and remarkable palate length.
