Chiara Boschis has an incredible story. In a region where women winemakers are far from the norm she has built a collection of wines that is the envy of many. The E Pira e Figli estate was passed from father to son for centuries, until the late 1980’s when Luigi Pira passed away. The 2012 Barolo Mosconi is one of the big surprises of this tasting. This is a gorgeous expression with a deep and enduring sense of balance. The wine offers excellent intensity with black fruit and spice, nicely contrasted against more subtle tones of licorice, red rose and polished river stone. The tannins are firm and tight, yet they show the latitude needed for long cellar-aging.See detailed press review

The 2012 Mosconi Barolo is a gorgeous showing in this vintage, demonstrating wonderful purity and refinement. With the first vintage in 2009, Mosconi is Chiara Boschis’s newest addition to her range. The Mosconi Cru is located in Monforte, and planted to vines averaging 50-years-old on Calcareous clay, facing south/southeast and situated at 1200 meters above sea level. The wine itself is a classic expression of Barolo, which opens to extremely fresh aromas of strawberries and sweet cherries followed by floral, mineral and hints of leather, all taking shape as this unwinds in the glass. On the palate this is beautifully structured with remarkable balance and notable depth as it expands into the silky, mouthwatering finish. Today, Mosconi is most impressive for its freshness and purity, but I expect this to continue to evolve gracefully over the course of many years.See detailed press review
