Olivier Humbrecht is one of the world's most renowned winegrowers. He is a Master of Wine and has been described by Robert Parker as the greatest white winemaker on earth. Yet he is very soft spoken, humble, and self-deprecating, which makes him perfectly suited to his assumed role as a global ambassador of wine. He is a champion of terroir, biodynamic farming principles, and non-interventionist winemaking, whose family have been winegrowers in Alsace for 12 generations (since 1620). He is...
Like most vintages, the nose is unmistakably Rangen, showing intense flinty, aromatic herbal aromas associated with a discreet exotic fruit, signature of the 2011 vintage. With such a nose, one can only expect a powerful attack that fills the mouth with wet stone aromas and a hint of smoke. The palate is rich and powerful with a good balance that finishes almost on a dry delicate structure.
The Riesling vines (with an average age of 49) are spread all over the 5.5 ha of the Clos-Saint-Urbain in the Rangen Grand Cru vineyard, benefitting from the slight soil variations; the poorer upper part brings finesse whereas the richer, lower section imparts power to the wine. Located at the opening of a cold and higher altitude valley, the Rangen enjoys a late ripening climate, but eventually catches up in October, when the steep slope (90%) and dark warm volcanic rocks allow the grapes to reach a high ripeness level.

Having pointed out – in connection with this year’s Heimbourg Riesling – that a wine of only 9 grams residual sugar could 20 years ago have been sold as vendange tardive, Olivier Humbrecht proceeds to explain that – at 32 grams – he felt his 2006 Riesling Rangen Clos Saint Urban had already fermented too far to be bottled as V.T., which is how he had envisioned it at harvest! The deep color here signifies the strong presence of botrytis. The smoky aromatic pungency is, I think, a case of noble rot reinforcing vineyard character.See detailed press review
