  • About this winery

At heart, Catena is a story about family. Family who poured their lives, passion and spirit into transforming scrub-laden desert into some of the most beautiful and unique vineyards in the world. Family that passed their knowledge from generation to generation, blending collective memory with state-of-the-art science from the new world of viticulture. Family who, through risk-taking, faith and a little luck, transformed their treasured Mendoza terroir into the fountainhead of the award-winning...

  • Tasting notes

Black fruit and flowers from Uco Valley Malbec laced with spicy Petit Verdot. Malbec lends freshness and smoothness, while Petit Verdot grants volume and persistence, conferring a lush, rich attack and wonderful length to the blend.

  • Winemaking notes

The Catena wines are a special assemblage of High Mountain Estate Vineyards made by fourth generation vintner, Laura Catena and chief winemaker, Alejandro Vigil. Although we have found that most of the Catena wines are consumed shortly after release, we are pleased to see that they age beautifully for ten to twenty years. Through decades of study and exploration within Mendoza's high altitude mountain terroirs, the Catena family has identified special locations for its Estate vineyards. From the marriage of these historic vineyards emerges a wine of unique character that has natural balance, concentration and a distinct varietal identity.

    March 2018

Deep and complex on the nose with a ton of black fruits with delicate spice and cocoa powder notes. Rich and plush with plenty of finesse at the long creamy finish. The second vintage for this great-value-for-money blend of Malbec with Charbono and Petit Verdot.

    June 2018

The 2016 DV Catena Tinto Histórico is an homage to the wine produced by Domingo Vicente Catena, Nicolas Catena's father, famous for producing elegant red blends. It's 72% Malbec, 21% Bonarda and 7% Petit Verdot from a specific plot in their Angelica vineyard that has this varietal mix in the field. The grapes were picked together and had a five-day cold soak before fermenting at the same time in stainless steel and then maturing in mostly French and some American oak barrels for 12 to 14 months, depending on the lot. It's very harmonious, and the varieties are nicely assembled. It's very classical, with polished tannins and supple flavors.

    May 2018

The second release of this pan-Mendoza cuvée of Malbec, Bonarda and Petit Verdot, made as a tribute to the early days of the Catena winery, is supple, ripe and sweet, all bramble and raspberry fruit with an overlay of scented, spicy oak.
